Laura & Chris’ wedding at Talhenbont Hall in Criccieth, North Wales, provided a range of opportunities to combine documentary-style wedding photography with some of the more traditional elements such as relaxed group photos and informal portraits. My priority was to capture the events of the day as they unfolded, focusing on composition, lighting, and framing rather than trying to impose myself on the wedding party and their guests.

The ceremony took place outdoors within the grounds of Talhenbont Hall down by the river and woods. The open-air setting and bright, sunny conditions offered both the advantage of natural light and the challenge of overcoming harsh shadows caused by the summer conditions. This is where having an in-depth understanding of photography comes into play, using bright areas of shadow for flattering, ethereal portraits and increasing the shutter speed to create punchy, dramatic skin tones when shooting in the bright sunlight. The historic architecture and surrounding greenery provided a strong backdrop for wide-angle shots, while a long lens allowed for unobtrusive close-ups of key moments throughout.
After the formalities, we headed to Criccieth Beach for a series of stylised portraits. Criccieth beach is a great space for wedding photos, with plenty of space and dramatic scenery as well as the fun element of the general public watching on. Criccieth Castle, with its stonework and elevated views, added another layer to the visual storytelling and a fantastic backdrop.
Back at Talhenbont Hall, the reception was set up in The Coach House, a modern room that contrasts well against the medieval hall. The speeches provided an opportunity for documentary coverage using a discreet approach, a 200mm lens ensuring the reactions and interactions were recorded from a distance & without distraction.
Once the evening progressed, the dance floor became the focal point. The use of off-camera flash and fast prime lenses ensured that even in low-light conditions, movement was captured sharply while maintaining atmosphere.
This North Wales wedding at Talhenbont Hall was a strong example of how venue choice, lighting, and a photographer who is able to combine contemporary and traditional wedding photography can deliver fantastic results. The combination of outdoor and indoor settings required a flexible approach, using a range of Nikon cameras and lenses to adapt to the changing conditions. For those looking for a Talhenbont Hall photographer who prioritises an unobtrusive, documentary approach, I offer a relaxed but organised style, with an emphasis on high end photography that is reasonably priced.
