Last summer, I met up with Karena and her five daughters for a family shoot on Abersoch Main Beach. Karena had been after some fun, relaxed photos of her girls — shots that felt natural and reflected the true personality of their family, rather than overly posed or too polished.

With five different ages and personalities to capture, the key was helping everyone feel comfortable early on. We spent a bit of time just chatting and walking along the beach, and once the girls started to relax, their energy really came through.

There was plenty of laughter (some of it helped along with terrible dad jokes from me), and before long, they were just being themselves — which is always when the best moments happen.

Abersoch Main Beach is brilliant for this kind of shoot. It’s got loads of space to move, great light depending on the time of day, and a really open, fresh feel that works well for natural portraits. As someone local to the area, I know how to work with the tides, the light, the backdrop and the fellow beach-goers to make the most of it — whether that’s wide scenic shots or close-up portraits.

The end result was a set of images that are playful, honest, and full of connection — exactly what Karena had been hoping for. Shoots like this are always a reminder that great family photos don’t need to be complicated — just a good location, some natural light, and a bit of trust to let things unfold.
